While at Lot-ek, I worked on the development of diagrams and renderings for an idea/concept project composed of airplane fuselages.

Below describes the massing process of the tower. Click to see progression.

Play, Regulate, Wrap/Manipulate, and Observe are words I'd use to describe the process in creating and manipulating a tectonic system.

The lessons learned through the making and exploration of a tectonic system was in turn applied to the design of a Travelers Center...

Upon entering the Travelers Center, the majority of travelers will enter from a long on-ramp onto the salvaged bridge. Once parked at the top level, the traveler will receive a full view of the Providence skyline. Soon after, the traveler is brought down under through a lifted fold of a lattice roof. Now submerged and disoriented, the traveler will make way through a shaded and hung system of paths underneath the lattice structure. At the end of the paths, the traveler enters a sheltered but airy space where informational resources may be found. Finally, departure occurs through a long path which will direct and connect the traveler to the existing city-bound board-walk.

I have defined 'dwelling' by creating a relationship between time, space, and light.

Figure 1: Chart shows the amount of time typically spent in the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal positions; laying, standing, and sitting. The chart is then transformed into a section cut.

Figure 2: Time and Occupancy

Figure 3: Occupancy and Light. The intention here is to prepare its occupant(s) for departure. To support smooth transition from a slumberous to conscious state, the occupancy of a space determines the width of its apertures. For example, a space capable of greater occupancy will have greater apertures for light. As you can see from the sections, occupancy decreases from the dwellings entrance to its final resting place, the bedroom.</description>

Genesis 11: 1-9
1 Now the whole earth had one language and few words. 2 And as men migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men had built. 6 And the Lord said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; and nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Ba'bel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. 10

People are driven by an escalating desire to accomplish more. Competition, pride and greed are all driving forces in this quest. The glass tower alludes to the tower of Babel, where a hubristic act of humans leads to their demise. People’s arrogance in thinking they could build a tower that would reach the Heavens infuriated God and he decided to put an end to this hubris. However, he did not use his power to directly destroy the tower, instead he created different languages. The loss of peoples’ ability to communicate became the critical weakness that caused the collapse of the tower to collapse.

Nevertheless, people continue to repeat these same mistakes. Shards of glass from the glass tower lie silent on the ground from the time of the tower’s collapse. But instead of these acting as reminders of the mistakes of the past, they become foundations for new cities. These new cities begin to grow taller and taller, repeating the same mistakes as the tower before them. The image of the fallen tower only becomes apparent to them when their cities have reached a certain height. Reaching that height they gain a new perspective of what they have done. However, this point of realization comes too late, and their city is already collapsing.

The increase in density in today’s cities is leading to an increase in competition for jobs, housing etc. which in turn leads to a faster paced society, where people are constantly rushing to get somewhere. Priorities change, and communication becomes secondary. The increase in the numbers of people in an area does not correspond to an increase in communication. Interactions between people may occur more frequently, but these are usually more superficial and oftentimes moments of aggravation and conflict; waiting in a line in the bank, crossing the street with cars and people coming at you from every direction, entering or exiting the subway at rush hour.

Our group discussion of Brodsky and Utkin’s Glass Tower has brought us back to our last intervention project of the “Felt Stop”. Through its ability to interfere with a determined flow rate, our intervention is a commentary on how cities have become these extremely fast-paced communities that encourage people to become selfish, opportunistic creatures, constantly in a state of hurry, pushing to get to the front of the line, at any expense. The felt stop is a transition zone that directs and controls the movement of people from one place to another. The passage funnels people exiting or entering the subway through a tight threshold where only one person can fit at any given time. Depending on the time of day when one is funneled through this spatial turnstile, the experience can either be one of reflective solitude, or of increased aggravation and confrontation.
